ISSAQUAH, Wash. (FNS) -- A unit of Kroger-owned Quality Food Centers took the grand prize in the Washington State Wine Commission's 2003 state-wide retail-display competition, beating out more than 60 competing stores. The unit reportedly sold 250 cases during the four-week contest, now in its second year.

Store associates at QFC's Klahanie unit set seven displays throughout the sales floor. "Each display involved some sort of moving part or action to catch shoppers' attention," said Randy Bennett, department manager.

For example, one rack was positioned in the floral department, with a model hot-air balloon that seemingly floated. In another, an endcap display was built around a bottle pouring into a bucket.

Other winners included Safeway's Olympia store, with Pat Veleke's display focusing on all things about Washington from the mountains to the valleys; and Brown & Cole's Southside Food Pavilion in Bellingham, with Tracey Olney's display featuring the state's winemaking history.
