Harris Teeter President to Retire
rp., parent company of Harris Teeter here, said last week Edward S. Dunn Jr., president of the supermarket chain, plans to retire in May 1998 to pursue other interests.
Dunn, 54, joined Harris Teeter in 1974 as controller; he will step down as president at the end of the company's fiscal year Sept. 30 and act as a consultant until his formal retirement eight months later.
The company said Fred J. Morganthall 2nd, 45, the chain's executive vice president, is expected to be named Dunn's successor. Morganthall is responsible for the company's store operations, merchandising, distribution and real estate activities.
Piggly Wiggly Adds Trade Slot
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Piggly Wiggly Corp. here, has named Jeffrey Turney director of trade development. In this new position, Turney is working closely with the vendor community in the development and expansion of the Piggly Wiggly system. He reports to Bob Johnson, senior vice president of sales and marketing.
Piggly Wiggly is a franchiser for more than 750 independently owned retail grocery stores, located primarily in the Southeast but stretching as far north as Wisconsin.
Farm Fresh Shuffles Executives
NORFOLK, Va. -- Farm Fresh here announced three changes to its executive staff last week.
Jeffrey P. Thomas is assuming the duties of senior vice president, marketing and merchandising. He succeeds Stephen R. Harmon, who has left the company after 16 years to join the senior management staff at Jitney Jungle Stores of America, Jackson, Miss.
Thomas joined Farm Fresh in 1981, while attending college, and has held several positions of increasing responsibility, including his most recent post, senior vice president of store operations. He reports to Ron Johnson, president and chief executive officer.
David L. Harmon has been named senior vice president of store operations, succeeding Thomas. Harmon has been in the grocery business since 1970, and has been with Farm Fresh since 1984, holding various positions, including store manager, district manager, regional director and regional vice president. In his new capacity, he reports to Johnson.
L. Allen Ray has been appointed district manager for the Tidewater, Va., area. Ray, a food retailer since 1970, joined the Farm Fresh staff in 1990 and has held several positions with the company, including store manager and district manager for both the Tidewater and Richmond divisions. Ray succeeds and reports to Harmon.
Ahold Board Member to Retire
ZAANDAM, Netherlands -- Ahold said Peter van Dun will retire from the corporate executive board Oct. 1. Jan Andreae, president of Albert Heijn, Ahold's largest supermarket subsidiary, has been named as his successor.
Van Dun, 59, joined Ahold in 1973 and was named to the board in 1980. As a board member, he currently holds responsibility for Albert Heijn and for worldwide human resource activities. Previously, he was responsible for Ahold's specialty store division and production units.
When he succeeds van Dun on the board, Andreae's responsibilities will be widened to include Albert Heijn store operations, the Albert Heijn Service Group and the production companies Marvelo and Meester.
Andreae joined Albert Heijn in 1980 and was appointed president in 1992.
