Affordable and fun wine brand to debut at 57 stores in Virginia
Giant Food of Landover, Md., is launching on Friday a new line of affordable, quality wines called Artie, exclusively at 57 of its Giant stores in Virginia.
The Artie line, which is priced between $6.99 to $9.99 per bottle, is made up of four fun varietals from around the globe, including:
• 2018 Chardonnay (South Africa): Tropical and refreshing with tasting notes of ripe apple, apricot, melon and tropical fruits.
• 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Australia): Fruity and spicy with hints of bramble, cherry and blackcurrants with spices.
• 2018 Pinot Grigio (Italy): Crisp and refreshing with tasting notes of apple and pear.
• 2018 Sauvignon Blanc (France): Fruity and zesty with flavors of lime, apple and gooseberry.
Each bottle label features a playful cork icon to highlight the wine's country of origin.

“We are thrilled to bring Artie wines, an easy-to-drink, affordable and lighthearted line, to our shoppers in Virginia,” said Jeffrey Pygott, category manager–beer & wine at Giant Food. “These wines are a great way to explore different wine varietals and pair with various favorite foods with family and friends.”
To celebrate the launch, Giant is offering a 10% off mix-and-match deal on six bottles or more of any wine in the store.
Giant Food of Landover, an Ahold Delhaize USA company, operates 163 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
Artie is just the latest private label wine in a growing field of both premium and affordable wines offered by grocery retailers.
At Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Super Markets, the company has enjoyed success with an exclusive private label wine called Publix Premium Limited Edition. The line is formulated for Publix by winemaker James Foster in limited quantities. Varieties include a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir.
Last year, Minneapolis-based Target Corp. introduced The Collection, an assortment of premium wines at an affordable price, which quickly became one of the retailer’s top-selling brands, said Angie Thompson, a spokeswoman for Target.
And hard discount grocer Aldi has made a name for itself with a wide range of award-winning private label wines that generally retail for about $5 to $6 per bottle, with most under $10. The retailer also offers more premium and specialty wines at certain times of the year, such as around the holidays.
