Weis Markets debuts Weis By Nature ice cream

New premium brand joins regional grocer’s private-label roster.

Weis Markets has expanded its private-label roster with Weis By Nature ice cream.

The Mid-Atlantic grocer said Thursday that the new premium product line—made in the chain’s creamery in its hometown of Sunbury, Pennsylvania—comes in 11 flavors. The ice cream carries a retail price of $3.99 for a 48-ounce container.

Weis By Nature flavors include Decadent Dutch Chocolate, Coffee In Creamery, Cookies ‘N Cream, Fudge Twirl, Mint Chocolate Chip, Mocha Caramel Swirl, Peanut Butter Cup, Peanut Butter Ripple, Salty Caramel Ripple,Vanilla Bean and Chocolate, and Vanilla Bean.

Weis Markets noted that Weis By Nature ice creams are all-natural and have no GMOs or artificial flavors, preservatives, colors or ingredients.

“Our Weis By Nature ice cream is a premium product made with all-natural ingredients. It also offers excellent quality at a great price,” Alison Gregas, director of private brands at Weis Markets, said in a statement. “Weis By Nature ice cream is a great addition to our Weis brand ice cream program, which now offers more than 70 flavors combined.”
 
Overall, Weis Markets operates 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia.

Ice cream remains one of the fastest-growing private-brand grocery categories, and many shoppers have been turning to store brands amid still-high food prices.

According to the Private Label Manufacturers Association’s “2023 Private Label Report,” ice cream was the 12th fastest-growing of 25 billion-dollar subcategories for 2022, with store-brand sales up 9.8% to $1.3 billion, based on IRI Unify data. Of the top 25 fastest-growing billion-dollar categories in private label, ice cream/sherbet came in at No. 22, with sales up 9.4% to $1.5 billion in 2022.
