SAN ANTONIO — H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here last week said it has named Craig Boyan president and chief operating officer. He succeeds Bob Loeffler, who the company said plans to retire but has agreed to remain as chief administrative officer for the next two years. Boyan, who had been chief strategic officer and COO, joined H-E-B in 2005 after working as a consultant for the chain as a partner with Monitor Group, New York. In addition, H-E-B said it has named Martin Otto chief merchant. He also remains chief financial officer. As chief merchant, Otto succeeds Steve Harper, who remains a consultant, the company said.

WEIS NAMES STOMBAUGH CONTROLLER

SUNBURY, Pa. — Paul M. Stombaugh has been named corporate controller at Weis Markets, the company said last week. He succeeds Scott Frost, who was named vice president and chief financial officer last October. Prior to joining Weis Markets, Stombaugh worked at Foot Locker's financial center in Harrisburg, Pa., as director of finance — accounts payable/accounts receivable. At Weis Markets, Stombaugh will oversee the company's accounting department, including accounts payable and receivable, store accounting, payroll and external reporting. Stombaugh will also oversee the company's internal controls and treasury function and assist in the development of budgets.

WOLFORD NAMED CHAIRMAN OF GMA

WASHINGTON — Grocery Manufacturers Association said Richard G. Wolford, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Del Monte Foods, has been elected chairman of the GMA board of directors to serve a two-year term. Wolford previously had been GMA's vice chairman of the board of directors and chairman of the Industry Affairs Council. He joined Dole Foods in 1967, was named president of Dole Packaged Foods in 1982 and stayed with the company through 1987. Wolford later left to join a venture-capital firm and led the acquisition of Del Monte Foods in 1997. He joined the company as its CEO, and was elected chairman in May 2000. In addition, GMA named four new directors:

  • J. Alexander M. “Sandy” Douglas Jr., president, North American Group, the Coca-Cola Co.

  • Tom Ferriter, president and CEO, Bush Brothers & Co.

  • Melanie Healey, group vice president, North America, the Procter & Gamble Co.

  • Michael Mendes, president and CEO, Diamond Foods.
