SpartanNash promotes supply chain chief David Petko

David Petko, chief supply chain officer at SpartanNash, has received a corporate title promotion to executive vice president.

Also, earlier this week, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based grocery distributor/retailer appointed Adrienne Chance as senior vice president of communications.

Petko previously was senior vice president and chief supply chain officer. In announcing his promotion on Thursday, SpartanNash noted that Petko, since joining SpartanNash last April, has led a supply chain transformation to drive savings, optimize the network footprint and rationalize SKUs. He also helped lead a new agreement with Coastal Pacific Food Distributors to expand the SpartanNash’s distribution footprint on the West Coast and an initiative to reduce fleet mileage by 10%, which cut carbon emission. The supply chain transformation effort is expected to yield cost savings of $15 million to $30 million, the company said.

As chief supply chain officer, Petko (left) oversees all aspects of SpartanNash’s global supply chain, which serves 145 corporate-owned supermarkets in the Midwest, over 2,100 independent retailers and national accounts across the United States, and 160 military commissaries and over 400 exchanges in the U.S. and internationally. He came to SpartanNash after almost 12 years at C&S Wholesale Grocers, most recently as senior vice president of supply chain.

“The SpartanNash supply chain is the backbone of our operations as a food solutions Company,” SpartanNash President and CEO Tony Sarsam said in a statement. “Dave’s leadership has resulted in immediate impact on our productivity, making us more efficient and effective and enabling us to focus more than ever on insights that drive innovative solutions for our food retailer customers.”

Chance (left) also joined SpartanNash in April 2021, in the role of vice president of communications. In announcing her promotion to senior vice president on Tuesday, SpartanNash said she helped lead the implementation and rollout of the new “Our Winning Recipe” corporate identity, supported the board of directors in developing a more robust environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy; established new channels for communication for associates, business partners and other key stakeholders; and led fundraising and disaster response for community partners.

“Adrienne and her team play a fundamental role in the execution of our Company strategy,” Sarsam stated, “and they have demonstrated measurable results as we build associate engagement internally and brand awareness externally.”

Chance came to SpartanNash after more than two years as senior director of corporate communications at Borden Dairy Co., joining fellow Borden alumni Sarsam and Chief Financial Officer Jason Monaco at the distributor.
