Giant Eagle has an “Ace” up its sleeve for its first store-within-a-store concept.

The Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain plans to add Ace Hardware departments in five stores, with the first slated to open this summer, according to Dan Donovan, marketing manager of corporate communications at the grocer.

Locations for the Ace Hardware sections include four Giant Eagle stores in the Pittsburgh area and one in Johnstown, Pa. Over the coming weeks, Donovan said, the stores will be remodeled to incorporate the new department.

Ace Hardware’s experience with store-within-a-store concepts at other retailers “makes them a natural fit for Giant Eagle,” he noted.

“It is imperative that we at Giant Eagle continue to innovate both within and outside of our supermarkets to succeed in our increasingly competitive food retail environment,” Donovan said in a statement. “We are excited to announce that select Giant Eagle locations in the Pittsburgh area will be incorporating Ace Hardware stores, bringing an array of home improvement offerings to our customers.”

Overall, multi-format retailer Giant Eagle operates more than 400 food, fuel and pharmacy locations — including over 200 supermarkets — in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Maryland.
