LOS ANGELES — Unified Grocers here said Monday it has hired two former Supervalu divisional presidents — Susan M. Klug and Leon G. Bergmann.

Klug (right) was named senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the member-owned cooperative. She was formerly president of the Southern California division of Albertsons, a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, before she resigned in April. As previously reported, she was succeeded in that role by Dan Sanders, who transfered from Supervau's Acme division.

In her new role Klug succeeds Phil Smith, executive vice president and CMO, who previously announced plans to retire Jan. 1, though he will continue to work for Unified on special projects. Klug will be responsible for all marketing functions, as well as retail support services and retail technology functions.

He was previously president, independent business, for Supervalu, responsible for supporting the growth of independent retailers supplied by the wholesaler, after serving as group vice president, independent sales, marketing and merchandising, in Supervalu’s supply chain services division. He was succeeded at Supervalu by Janel Haugarth in October.

Bergmann will have responsibilities for sales and service functions across all regions of Unified, and he will also work with other sales product leaders to develop programs for members.
