Kroger has converted one of its stores in Franklin, Tenn. to an all-self-checkout experience, according to local news outlet WKRN.

The store was rid of cashiers and baggers on July 21 and was selected as an ideal conversion because of the rate of customers who were already using self-checkout, a Kroger spokesperson confirmed to WKRN.

“These allow our customers to scan and bag their own items,” said Lauren Bell, corporate affairs manager for Kroger’s Nashville division, adding that it makes the experience faster.

In addition to the change, the location has also added sider lanes to help accommodate shoppers with larger orders. For those who are not fond of self-checkout, the staff will still be available in the store to help.

“We still have staff at the front end ready and willing to step in to assist those customers [who don’t want to or are unable to scan their own items],” added Bell.

Additionally, Kroger said there are plans to make another Middle Tennessee store 100% self-checkout, and will possibly expand to more locations later this year. The grocer said that some job titles were changed, but no jobs were eliminated in order to accommodate the updates.

A Kroger store in Tennessee now only has self-checkout available for customers. Kroger says the cashiers and baggers will be used for other duties in the store. Do you believe the grocer when it says workers will be transitioned to other jobs?
