Meijer Inc. next month plans to open three new supercenters in Ohio.

Stores in Avon, Mentor and Stow are scheduled to open for business on May 14, Meijer said yesterday, adding that the greater Cleveland area locations continue an expansion into northeastern Ohio announced in 2017.

The 155,000-square-foot supercenters will offer fresh produce, meat and dairy, delivered seven days a week, plus a fresh bakery with bread and other items baked four times daily. The 24-hour stores also have a pharmacy department offering Meijer’s free prescription program, which includes generic antibiotics, prenatal vitamins and medications for people with diabetes and high cholesterol.

A Meijer Express gas station at the Avon location is slated to open on April 18.

"We're extremely excited to open the doors to our newest stores here in Northeast Ohio," Tom Wilson, regional vice president at Meijer, said in a statement. "For the last 40 years, customers across the state have enjoyed our fresh grocery options, wide selection of general merchandise and overall value. Now we're getting ready to bring our one-stop shopping experience to Avon, Mentor and Stow."

The three new stores will add about 900 jobs to the area. In support of the openings, Meijer plans to hold grand opening ceremonies with company officials and local leaders at each location on May 14. The retailer also will launch special promotions and events at each store starting on May 19.

Meijer currently has 39 stores and employs about 10,000 people in Ohio, where the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based chain opened its first store in 1981 in the Columbus area. The company also operates a distribution center and dairy processing facility in Tipp City, Ohio.

Last fall, Meijer launched home delivery of beer and wine to customers from its Ohio stores through the Meijer Home Delivery service, which uses Shipt for order fulfillment and delivery. Ohio and Michigan are the only states where alcohol is included as part of the retailer’s delivery service.

Overall, Meijer operates more than 240 supercenters in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
