Publix Expands to Myrtle Beach Market

LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets said it plans to further extend its reach northward along the South Carolina coast by entering the Myrtle Beach area with two stores.

A 49,000-square-foot store in North Myrtle Beach will be located in the Coastal North Town Center and is expected to open in late 2014. A second lease is in the Pawleys Island Plaza, and is part of a redevelopment of an existing shopping center. That 45,000-square-foot Publix supermarket is expected to open in early 2015.
The stores, located just south of the North Carolina border, will expand Publix’s geographic reach about 100 miles north along coastal South Carolina, where the closest Publix stores currently operate in the Charleston market.
The current grocery share leader in the Myrtle Beach market is Wal-Mart Stores, with a share of 26.7% and six locations, according to Tucson, Ariz.-based Metro Market Studies, followed by Food Lion, with 19 stores; Bi-Lo, with seven stores; and Kroger Co, with four locations.
