PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said it will install self-service health kiosks at more than 700 stores later this year — a program it said is unrelated to the company's pending wellness initiative.

The kiosks, from Atlanta-based SoloHealth, will provide consumers with free screenings for vision, blood pressure, weight and body-mass index and an overall health assessment, as well as to check symptoms. The bilingual SoloHealth Stations are backed by technology that allows changes to be made remotely and to expand the services offered, the manufacturer said.

"Safeway shares our commitment to empowering consumers to take charge of their health," said Stephen Kendig, chief commercial officer and executive vice president of SoloHealth. "We believe that access, awareness and education are keys to a healthy lifestyle, and we're bringing comprehensive health and wellness services directly to Safeway's customers."

The company also said the kiosks offer personalized, targeted and interactive opportunities for consumers, retailers and advertisers.
