Schnuck Markets’ EatWell to make debut next week
Specialty food store marks new format for regional grocer

Schnuck Markets plans to open its first EatWell specialty store on June 24 in Columbia, Mo.
The new retail concept — dubbed EatWell, A Natural Food Store by Schnucks — targets consumers who prioritize health and wellness, natural foods and the “occasional splurge,” St. Louis-based Schnucks said.
Located at 111 South Providence Rd. in Columbia, the EatWell store will occupy the site of a 42,000-square-foot former Lucky’s Market supermarket. Schnucks acquired the leased store in late March as part of an auction of bankrupt Lucky’s assets.
Schnucks said the store has undergone an extensive remodel for the conversion to the EatWell concept, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is being planned to mark the launch of the new store format.
“I’m excited for our customers to discover all that we have in store for them at EatWell, including organic produce, a natural living section, freshly squeezed juices, as well as clean-label indulgences,” Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck said in a statement. “EatWell will also have unique features such as full-service sushi and ramen bars open for lunch and dinner.”
EatWell, too, will carry grass-fed beef, sustainable seafood and deli meat that’s fresh-roasted in the store. Also to enhance the shopping experience, customers perusing the store will be able to drink a local draft beer, root beer, kombucha, glass of wine or beverage whipped up by the on-site barista, Schnucks said.
The EatWell location will employ about 80 workers, most of whom are from the former Lucky’s store, according to Schnucks. Store hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. In line with COVID-19 safety measures, customers will be reminded to observe social distancing and urged to wear face coverings. The first shopping hour of each Wednesday, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., will be reserved for seniors and people at higher risk for coronavirus due to underlying health conditions.
With EatWell, Schnucks will have two stores in Columbia. The company said the Schnucks supermarket at 1400 Forum Blvd. will continue to provide traditional grocery offerings plus Schnucks-exclusive signature items. Overall, the retailer currently has 112 stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa.
