SpartanNash brings scan-and-go to checkout
Mobile app makes debut at Family Fare supermarkets
December 11, 2018
SpartanNash Co. has introduced a scan-and-go checkout app at two Michigan stores and plans to roll it out to more locations next year.
Called Check Out Now, the mobile app lets customers use their smartphones to scan product barcodes and bag groceries themselves at dedicated kiosks, enabling them to complete their purchase and finish their shopping trip more quickly and easily, SpartanNash said Monday.
Customers can download the Check Out Now app free from the Apple or Android app stores and log in via their Yes loyalty account. To use the app, they connect to the store’s wi-fi, scan product barcodes with their mobile device as they shop or visit electronic produce scales to add items, and bag items as they go. The app keeps a running total of their items and alerts customers about any digital savings. They then go to a Check Out Now station to complete their purchase. (Click here to see video.)
“At SpartanNash, our goal is always to find ways to better serve our customers through our stores,” Tom Swanson, senior vice president and general manager of corporate retail at SpartanNash, said in a statement. “We deliver what our guests want, when they want it, fast and friendly, and Check Out Now is just another way we’re enhancing our customer experience by providing store guests with convenient, personalized solutions and the ability to shop when and how they want.”
Check Out Now has been launched so far at Family Fare supermarkets in Hudsonville and Wyoming, Mich.
SpartanNash noted that Check Out Now, which is integrated with Yes rewards, also gives customers access to exclusive deals throughout the store, as well as to digital coupons, clubs, rewards and fuel savings at checkout.
“Just like Fast Lane [online grocery shopping] and other technology solutions, Check Out Now makes it easier than ever to browse, discover new items and indulge a little, all at affordable prices,” stated Brian Holt, vice president of marketing Brian Holt. “Whether you prefer scanning and bagging your items as you shop with Check Out Now, placing a delivery or curbside pickup order with Fast Lane, or interacting with our knowledgeable associates to find your mealtime solutions, SpartanNash and Family Fare have you covered.”
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash operates 139 stores under the banners Family Fare Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery, Dan’s Supermarket and Family Fresh Market. Last month, the grocery distributor unveiled a deal to acquire Martin’s Super Markets Inc., which has 21 stores in Indiana and Michigan.
