Regional grocer The Giant Company plans to add 4,000 new part- and full-time workers to meet ongoing strong consumer demand for groceries heading into the holiday season.

Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant said Tuesday it aims to fill both front- and back-end positions. Jobs include positions at its new store at 6301 Grayson Rd. in Harrisburg, Pa., slated to open Oct. 23, as well as at other stores across the chain, such as cashiers, stocking staff, and associates in the deli and other fresh departments.

The retailer said its Giant Direct facilities in Camp Hill and Lancaster, Pa., also are looking to fill various positions, including order selectors and delivery drivers.

“We’re excited to see the team coming together for our new store in Harrisburg, and we’re looking for even more caring and enthusiastic team members,” Matthew Lutcavage, vice president of human resources at The Giant Company, said in a statement. “With the increased demand for both in-store and online grocery shopping continuing, we are looking to hire in all areas of the business throughout the holiday season and beyond, helping us deliver on our purpose of connecting families for a better future.”

Giant noted that, since the start of the year, it has hired about 7,000 temporary and part-time workers across its family of brands, which includes food stores Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market plus online grocery services Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct.

Much of that growth was triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak in March, which spurred consumer stockpiling of groceries and other essential supplies in Giant’s market area and nationwide. In late April, Giant announced plans to hire another 3,000 associates — or nearly 10% of its total workforce — after having added about 4,000 temporary and part-time workers across its banners over the previous month.

New employees will take part in a training program based on the company’s recently launched brand platform, “For Today’s Table,” Giant said. In late December, the retailer also enacted new parental leave benefits that provide qualifying full- and part-time staff with four weeks of fully paid leave during the first 12 months following the birth, adoption or legal placement of a child, in addition to the six weeks paid short-term disability for birthing mothers. Other benefits for associates include paid time off, education reimbursement, and health care and disability coverage.

Part of Ahold Delhaize USA, Giant has approximately 35,000 employees and operates about 190 stores, 132 pharmacies, 105 fuel stations and over 130 online grocery pickup and delivery hubs in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
