Walmart can’t stand up to Roundy’s
Smaller retailer holds huge lead in market share in Milwaukee, Wis., area
Walmart grocery is being dominated in the Milwaukee area, reports the Milwaukee Business Journal.
That’s not something you see often, if at all, as Walmart has saturated the market nationwide with over 4,600 locations and has been placed on a thrown by other data houses as the king of grocery.
According to the Regional Retail Dashboard, which monitors omnichannel purchase and promotional trends across the four U.S. census regions, Walmart leads all grocery retailers in CPG spending. It’s not even close, with the Bentonville, Ark.-based company holding a 21% share and the next closest retailer, Costco, at 7.8%.
Data analytics company Numerator has Walmart at the top of the grocery retailer list for the third year in a row. The report tracks purchase data and surveys verified buyers to provide insight into consumer purchase behavior. In 2023, Walmart captured a 23.6% market share nationwide.
Things are different in Wisconsin. Data for the region of Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington counties shows Roundy’s with an almost insurmountable lead over Walmart in market share—36% to 21% in 2023. Roundy’s cashed in with $2.3 billion in annual sales a year ago, while Walmart had $1.3 billion.
Roundy’s is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger, which is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has 50 stores in the southeast region of Wisconsin.
As of May 7, Roundy’s has 150 stores according to ScrapeHero.
