Wegmans tops Fortune’s best retail places to work list
High wages, intensive training, and employee investments are some of the reasons for recognition
Wegmans, the 107-year-old grocery chain based in Rochester, N.Y., has topped Fortune’s Best Companies list every year since the list was launched in 1998, and this year it has managed a repeat performance.
Fortune reports that Wegmans has been recognized for so long because, for starters, it has over 53,000 workers and maintains a $15 minimum wage, nearly double the national average.
“Workers laud the privately owned company for its intensive training program, commitment to flexible scheduling, and focus on providing employees the opportunity for advancement,” according to Fortune.
For the last five years, Wegmans has been consistent in reviewing each job opening with an emphasis on skill and relevant job experience. It also invests heavily in employee education, awarding $135 million in scholarships to more than 44,000 employees since its scholarship program's launch in 1984.
Other grocery retailers featured on the “large” companies list included:
No. 2 Target Corporation
