Whole Foods Market

On Wednesday, Whole Foods Market opened its newest store in Washington, D.C.’s Glover Park neighborhood, the first of two Whole Foods Market stores expected to open this year that feature parent company Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.

Allowing customers to skip the checkout line, Just Walk Out uses overhead computer-vision cameras, weight sensors and deep-learning technology to detect merchandise that shoppers take from or return to shelves and track items selected in a virtual cart. At the store’s entry, customers are prompted to select Just Walk Out shopping or use the traditional checkout or self-checkout lanes.

In addition, the 21,500-square-foot store offers a wide variety of local products, all hand-selected by Whole Foods Market Mid Atlantic’s Local Forager, Kathleen Leverenz. The Glover Park location also includes a prepared foods section featuring Kikka Sushi, New York; an array of organic, conventional, local and Sourced for Good produce; local and sustainable seafood; full-service butcher; a specialty department dedicated to fine cheeses and specialty foods; a fresh bakery department offering house-made custom decorated cakes, scratch-made breads and options for dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan treats; and more than more than 250 beers and more than 500 wines from 50 local suppliers.
