Boar’s Head Brand recalls 7 million pounds of deli meat
Company makes move after liverwurst is linked to national Listeria outbreak
The sliced deli meat recall linked to a Listeria outbreak appears to have reached a climax, but not after millions of pounds of meat have been pulled.
On Friday, Boar’s Head Brand initiated a voluntary recall of 10 products due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. In total, over 200,000 pounds of meat, all originating from the company’s Jarratt, Va., facility, was removed.
The recall expanded Monday night after the U.S. Department of Agriculture informed Boar’s Head Brand that one of the 10 recalled products, Strassburger Brand Liverwurst, was linked to the national deli meat Listeria outbreak, leading to illnesses and two deaths across 13 states.
Upon hearing the news, Boar’s Head Brand made the decision to voluntarily recall anything associated with the Jarratt plant, which totals 7 million pounds of product ranging from ham to bologna to sausage. The entire list can be found here.
“On behalf of all of us at Boar’s Head Brand, we want to let our customers and consumers know that we deeply regret that our liverwurst products were found to be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes,” the company said in a statement. “No words can fully express our sympathies and the sincere and deep hurt we feel for the families that have suffered losses and others who endured illness.”
Grocery stores decided to shut down their deli counters due to the Boar’s Head recall so that they could remove the recalled meat and sanitize everything. Stop & Shop and Big Y stores were involved in the deli counter closings on Tuesday and last Friday.
