85-year-old Fareway Stores, Inc. continues its growth mode with new store openings

At 85 years old, Fareway Stores Inc. is still growing.

The Boone, Iowa-based grocery retailer will open its 135th location as it celebrates its milestone anniversary this month.

Known for helping rural towns access groceries, Fareway’s newest location will in be Clive, Iowa, which is 10 miles west of Des Moines.

The 24,000-square-foot store will be located at 16035 Hickman Rd. and will open its doors next Tuesday following a private ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Monday afternoon.

The new store will feature groceries that include fresh-cut produce as well as locally sourced items. The store will also carry a variety of craft beer, fine wines and top-shelf spirits. The location will also offer online shopping and curbside pickup, available at Shop.Fareway.com. 

Continuing its efforts to alleviate food access disparities in rural communities, Fareway last month announced plans to build a 10,600-square-foot full-service, neighborhood grocery store in Hull, Iowa, which has a population of under 2,500 according to the U.S. 2020 census. Construction is planned to begin in late summer, with a tentative opening in spring 2024.

“Communities depend on a local grocer to offer high-quality products and unmatched service and help keep communities vibrant,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer in a statement.

Fareway, which is a family-owned business, operates in seven states. The Midwest grocer also operates standalone meat markets and last year opened its first Fareway Meat Market in Minnesota.
