Aldi eyes growth in Chicago area with new store opening next week

The fast-growing discount grocer will open its newest store in the Chicago area next Thursday, with another store planned to open later this year at Six Corners, a shopping district in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago's Northwest Side.

Fast-growing German discount grocery chain Aldi will open a new store in the Chicago area next Thursday, with more store expansion already underway in the Windy City.

Aldi will open its newest store on the northwest side of Chicago in North Riverside, Illinois, at 7517 W. Cermak Rd., which will replace the store located at 2000 Harlem Ave., as that store is set to officially close on Wednesday.

“We are excited to provide local shoppers a revamped and refreshed Aldi store designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” said Batavia Division VP Heather McCarthy in a statement. “We are always looking out for the needs of our shoppers and decided to move our North Riverside store to allow more room for added fresh, high-quality products at affordable prices, which our loyal shoppers know and love.” 

Aldi has 35 locations in the Chicago area, McCarthy, told WGB.

With no signs of slowing in the Windy City, a new store is underway for 4747 W. Irving Park Rd. at Six Corners, a shopping district in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago's Northwest SideThe new Six Corners store will open toward the end of the year, McCarthyr told WGB.

Last year, Aldi’s expansion added new stores across the Southeast, but 2023 is shaping up to include other parts of the U.S., including the Midwest.

Aldi opened two new stores last week in Missouri at 1631 Denmark Rd. in Union and 2901 E. Business Loop 70 in Columbia, upping its Midwest count. “The stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” Rob Jeffries, O’Fallon regional VP for Aldi, said in a statement.  “We have served this community for more than 40 years and are excited to continue to offer Columbia residents an affordable way of shopping.”

Looking to also expand its presence in Massachusetts, the discount grocer will open a new store at 100 Independence Way in Danvers next Thursday, according to the grocer’s website.

Founded in 1961, Aldi recently took the top spot as the most-trusted discount and small-format grocer, according to the 2023 Most Trusted Grocery Retailers in America list conducted by market research firm BrandSpark International in partnership with Winsight Grocery Business and Newsweek.
