Big Y will open its 72nd location in Norwood, Massachusetts, Thursday, the Springfield, Massachussets-based supermarket retailer said this week.
The 54,465-square-foot store, located at at 434 Walpole St., has hired 100 employees and is still seeking new employees, Big Y said in a statement.
Aside from grocery essentials, the store will include a selection of retail foodservice offerings including hand-tossed pizzas, made-to-order subs, fresh seafood delivered six days a week, live Maine lobsters steamed at no added cost, cooked-to-order fish & chips and sushi prepared daily.
A wide variety of natural, organic and gluten-free products will be available as well as over 500 different local items.
The new store will have self-checkouts and myExpress Checkout, Big Y’s new scan-and-go service where customers can scan their own items.
“Our team has been nothing less than amazing throughout this process. From construction to procurement, sales and operations, everyone has proved to be 'better together' to make sure the store is the best possible place for customers to shop,” said Store Director Nate Draper, in a statement.
In grocery retail for the past 33 years, Draper started as a part-time service clerk and has held many other positions, including trainer and merchandiser. He joined Big Y five years ago to be part of their employee-first culture, Big Y said in a statement.
“The time, effort and care put in by every person at every level truly proves to me that we are still a Big Y family focused on doing what's right and creating solutions for and connections with our customers above all else," Draper said.
As part of its grand opening celebrations, Big Y will donate $1,000 to Lovin’ Spoonfuls Food Rescue of Boston.
Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where two roads converge to form a "Y." Family owned and operated, Big Y operates stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts and has over 11,000 employees.
