Fareway Stores, Inc. is planning a new store relocation in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the Midwest-based grocery retailer announced on Wednesday. The grocery retailer’s new 21,000-square-foot store will be at the northeast corner of 175th Street and Highway 71 in Spirit Lake.

The grocery retailer purchased the property, and site work is set to start in early fall. New construction is planned for spring 2024.

“The Spirit Lake Fareway has served the community with the best in customer service since 1985. We are excited to provide a new store location, which will continue to best serve this thriving and growing community,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer. “We want to thank city staff and community leaders for helping make this project possible.”

Local officials praised the grocery retailer’s reinvestment in the community.

"Fareway has been a cornerstone of Spirit Lake for a long time and has always lived up to its reputation for great customer service and the best of small-town values,” said City Administrator Gregg Owens in a statement. “Spirit Lake has seen significant and positive growth in the past several years, and Fareway’s continuing commitment to the community is both an affirmation of that progress and a reflection of the regard residents have for its services.”

The Iowa-based grocery retailer has shown no signs of slowing when it comes to new store growth in its home state. New stores in Iowa are already slated to be coming to Story City, Hull and more.

Fareway is a family-owned business that operates 135 stores in seven states.
