Boone, Iowa-based Fareway Stores Inc. broke ground on Friday in Kansas City, Mo., on a future 8,700-square-foot Fareway Meat Market, which is set to open spring 2023.

The new Meat Market located at 8606 NE 85th Street in Kansas City, will offer customers fresh, high-quality meat, which it touts as “second-to-none”; a full-service butcher counter; farm-fresh produce; low, competitive prices; and to-go barbecue meal options through McGonigle’s Kitchen and Catering, which features traditional, Kansas City barbecue favorites prepared by the grocer onsite, Fareway said in a statement.

“We are excited to expand in the Kansas City metro with the addition of new meat market location,” said Fareway President Garrett S. Piklapp, in a statement. “Fareway is known for only the best in fresh, high-quality meat, with our full-service butcher counters and prepared foods, and this will be the ultimate destination for Northland area residents.”

A variety of craft beer, fine wines, and top-shelf spirits will be available, and the location will offer online shopping and curbside pickup, available at Shop.Fareway.com.

Local and state officials echoed positive comments regarding the store’s ground-breaking ceremony: “The welcome addition of Fareway Meat Market to our area speaks to the growth and vibrancy of this community,” said Senator Lauren Arthur, who represents Clay County. “The Northland is growing, attracting businesses, families, and, of course, foodies. We're all thrilled Fareway Meat Market decided to expand here.”

Last month the Midwest grocer opened the doors to its first development in Kansas—signifying the seventh state of operation for the retailer—with a 7,400-square-foot Fareway Meat Market. The Midwest grocer also operates a Fareway Meat Market in the Des Moines, Iowa, neighborhood of Beaverdale.

Fareway Stores is also looking to expand its home state footprint as it has agreed to purchase Brick Street Market and Café in Bondurant, Iowa, the Boone, Iowa-based retailer said last Friday

Located at 114 Brick Street SE in Bondurant, the 20,000-square-foot store, which opened in spring 2014, will transition to a Fareway in early 2023. The grocer must still complete its necessary due diligence before the transaction will close, Fareway said in a statement.
