Boone, Iowa-based Fareway Stores Inc. is growing—not only as a grocery chain but as a friend as well.

On Feb. 9, the retailer celebrated the opening of its newest 11,000-square-foot-store location at 339 E. High St. in Rockwell City, Iowa, with plans to open an additional four stores throughout Iowa later this year or early next year, as well as locations in Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.

“The Fareway grocery chain is a friend to rural Iowa. Through this program of opening smaller-sized grocery stores in rural communities, Fareway is helping rural towns have easier access to groceries,” Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink said in a statement. “It provides a lifeline for the community, bringing independence and convenience back to our small towns. We’re thankful Fareway is filling a tremendous need.”

Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer said in a statement that “we want to thank the community for their outstanding support in making this project possible.”

Cramer, who also recently announced the promotion of Jeffrey "Jeff" Stearns to SVP of marketing and advertising, said Fareway is looking forward to being part of the community at large.

“We are eager for Fareway to join Rockwell City in order to serve the community locally and to become an integral part of the community,” Cramer said in a statement.

The company said the new store offers customers fresh, high-quality meat, which it touts as “second-to-none”; a full-service butcher counter; farm-fresh produce; low, competitive prices; and customer service that includes to-your-car carryout.

The location will offer FastLane, a self-service checkout option, online shopping and curbside pickup, available at Shop.Fareway.com.

Rockwell City Mayor Phil Heinlen echoed positive comments regarding the store’s opening, “We are excited to welcome Fareway to Rockwell City. Area residents have been eagerly awaiting the store’s opening,” said Heinlen in a statement. “We want to thank Fareway for their investment and commitment to making the Rockwell City community vibrant.”

“We are proud to have a Fareway in Rockwell City,” said Rockwell City Chamber President Jason Shaver. “The store is a great asset and will pave the way for exciting new growth in Rockwell City and Calhoun county.”

Looking ahead, the company provided a list of future Fareway Stores that are set to open:

  • Gretna, Neb. – This new location’s grand opening is tentatively set for March 30. The grocery store will be 21,000 square feet.

  • Des Moines, Iowa (Beaverdale) – Des Moines’ first meat market will open in May 2022.

  • Olathe, Kan. – Fareway’s first development in Kansas—and its seventh state for the retailer—is a 7,400-square-foot Meat Market that will open in June and be connected to a liquor store. The Meat Market concept originates from Fareway’s more than 80-year commitment to providing the best in fresh, high-quality meat, the company said.

  • Luverne, Minn. – This will be a renovation of an existing building on the northeast corner of Main Street and Kniss Avenue. The 2,300-square-foot meat market will serve a population of 5,000. This project is anticipated to be complete in early fall 2022.

  • Ogden, Iowa –The new 8,300-square-foot full-service location will be open in late fall 2022.
