Fareway Stores, Inc. is expanding its Iowa store count, again and again.

The Iowa-based grocery retailer announced plans on Friday to build a new, approximately 10,800 square foot store at the southwest corner of Broad Street and Factory Outlet Drive in Story City, Iowa. Demolition of existing structures will begin this month, with new store construction to begin in early 2024.

“Communities depend on a local grocer to offer high quality products and unmatched service. Fareway values the communities and people it serves, and we look forward to building a new Fareway store in Story City,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer in a statement. “We want to thank city officials and economic development for helping make this project possible.”

“As the Mayor of Story City, no one will be happier once we finally break ground on a new Fareway store,” said Mayor Mike Jensen in a statement. “The most frequent question I get asked daily is, ‘when is Fareway coming?’” A groundbreaking ceremony will take place in early 2024 with more details to come, Fareway announced.

Looking to widen its home state brick-and-mortar store count, the retailer, which purchased Brick Street Market in Bondurant, Iowa, last year, will open Wednesday as a Fareway store.

Located at 114 Brick Street SE in Bondurant, the 20,000 square foot store has been remodeled.

The store will offer grocery essentials as well as fresh-cut produce, locally sourced items and a variety of craft beer, fine wines, and top-shelf spirits.

The location will offer online shopping and curbside pickup, available at Shop.Fareway.com.

Earlier this week, the Boone, Iowa-based grocery retailer broke ground on a 24,000-square-foot full-service, neighborhood grocery store in Norwalk, Iowa. The new store will be located at 2200 Sunset Drive as part of Norwalk Central, a mixed-use development area that stretches between Beardsley Street to High Road along the east side of Sunset Drive and Highway 28.

Last month, the grocery retailer opened its 135th location in Clive, Iowa, which is 10 miles west of Des Moines. The 24,000-square-foot store is located at 16035 Hickman Rd.

Continuing its efforts to alleviate food access disparities in rural communities, Fareway announced in April it plans to build a 10,600-square-foot full-service, neighborhood grocery store in Hull, Iowa, which has a population of under 2,500 according to the U.S. 2020 census. Construction is planned to begin in late summer, with a tentative opening in spring 2024.

“Communities depend on a local grocer to offer high-quality products and unmatched service and help keep communities vibrant,” Cramer said in a statement.

Fareway is a family-owned business that operates 135 stores in seven states.
