Fareway's 135th store opens as Iowa-based grocer celebrates 85 years in business

Family-owned Fareway Stores, Inc. has much to celebrate this month.

The Iowa-based grocery retailer opened its 135th store on Tuesday at 16035 Hickman Rd. in Clive, Iowa, all while celebrating its 85th anniversary this month.

“As we proudly celebrate 85 years in business, we are excited to open this new Clive store, which marks 135 Fareway store locations across a 7-state Midwest region,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer, in a statement. “As the metro continues to expand, we look forward to growing with them and further serving area residents. Thanks to both local and state officials who made this project possible.”

The 24,000-square-foot store features a full-service butcher counter and grocery essentials. The new store will also include fresh-cut produce, locally sourced items and a variety of craft beer, fine wines and top-shelf spirits.

The new store, which is located about 10 miles west of Des Moines, is a welcome addition, community leaders said.

“Fareway’s reputation for outstanding meat and grocery will make this store a popular stop,” said City of Clive Mayor John Edwards in a statement. “And more than that, Fareway is a wonderful corporate partner who supports so many civic organizations and events in Clive.”

The new store will be managed by grocery manager Josh Johnson and market manager Chris Irlbeck. The store is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The location will offer FastLane, a self-service checkout option, online shopping and curbside pickup, available at Shop.Fareway.com. Fareway is offering a promotion now through June 17 for a $5 discount to shoppers on their first online order by using the code, CLIVEFIVE.

Fareway operates 135 stores and has more than 12,000 total employees.
