Abingdon, Va.-based Food City broke ground recently on a new location at 1388 Tesla Blvd. in Alcoa, Tenn., that is expected to open in early fall.

The company said the 54,000-plus-square-foot retail supermarket will have an in-store bakery/deli, complete with an Asian wok, hot food bar, cafe seating area, deluxe salad bar, hickory wood smoker, stone hearth pizza oven and fresh sushi.

Looking to expand its grocery selection, the company said the store will feature a floral boutique, pharmacy, wine tasting station, Starbucks cafe and an off-site Food City Gas N’ Go. Food City's GoCart curbside pickup will be available as well.

Other features include a full-service meat and seafood department that will offer pre-marinated and seasoned oven-ready products, top-quality meats that are all-natural with no solutions added and certified Angus beef. In-house butchers will be available to hand cut steaks and fresh meat to order, the retailer said.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to construct a new state-of-the-art Food City to serve our loyal customers,” said Steven Smith, Food City president and CEO.

Food City said the new location will also feature several award-winning energy saving concepts, “ranging from energy efficient glass cooler doors, parking lot lights and refrigeration systems to motion sensors and 100% LED lighting, as well as an open rafter ceiling design.”

“Our customers will enjoy the expanded variety/selection and exciting new conveniences and services the new store will offer,” District Manager Barry Brogan said in a statement.

Last month, the company broke ground in Cartersville, Ga., on a 59,000-plus-square-foot supermarket that is expected to open this summer.

Food City parent K-VA-T Food Stores operates 138 retail outlets throughout southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, east Tennessee, north Georgia, and Alabama.
