Food City to break ground on 2nd Alabama supermarket on Friday

Food City will break ground on Friday for its second Alabama location, the Abingdon, Virginia-based grocery retailer told WGB this week. The new "state-of-the-art supermarket" will be located at 1001 Rainbow Drive in Gadsden, Alabama, the grocer said.

The 53,700-square-foot grocery store is expected to open in late summer, bringing jobs and tax revenue for the citizens of the city of Gadsden as well as Etowah County, Food City said in a statement.

The store will have an in-store bakery/deli, with an Asian wok, hot food bar, cafe seating area, fresh food bar, hickory wood smoker, stone hearth pizza oven and fresh sushi. Other features include full-service meat and seafood departments with in-house butchers. 

Looking to expand beyond its grocery selection, the store will feature a floral boutique, pharmacy, Starbucks Cafe and a Food City Gas N’ Go. Food City's GoCart curbside pickup and home delivery will be available as well, the grocer said. The new location will also include energy-saving concepts.

Last month, Food City officials broke ground on a new location at 1375 Broad Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The 53,300-plus-square-foot supermarket located in the downtown area is expected to open in late summer as well.

Food City parent K-VA-T Food Stores operates 149 retail outlets throughout southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, east Tennessee, north Georgia and Alabama.
