Giant Eagle is adding another layer of credibility to its sustainable seafood policy as a new partner with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership’s Ocean Disclosure Project (ODP).
A highlight of its participation with ODP will find the Pittsburgh-based multiformat retailer publishing a public profile of all the fisheries used within its seafood departments to source wild-caught species and related information on management, catch method and environmental impact.
“At Giant Eagle, sustainability is a companywide, strategic initiative,” said Jannah Jablonowski, Giant Eagle spokesperson, in a statement. “Through our strong partnerships with organizations like the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, and participation in the Ocean Disclosure Project, we’re pleased to be able to share this valuable sourcing information with our seafood customers.”
SFP began its Ocean Disclosure Project in 2015 to provide information and resources for consumers and others interested in accessing transparency about sustainable seafood. To date, 11 U.S. and European companies ranging from retailers to suppliers and aquaculture feed manufacturers have signed on as ODP participants, including Publix and Walmart and U.K. retailers Asda, Co-op Food and Morrisons.
“Giant Eagle is demonstrating a clear commitment to transparency and sustainable seafood sourcing by joining the ODP,” said Kathryn Novak, programs division director for SFP. “We’re thrilled to see Giant Eagle demonstrating its leadership in the retail industry by participating.”
