Green Valley to Take Over Mars Site

Baltimore-based wholesaler B. Green & Co. will open a third location of its Green Valley Marketplace concept at a former Mars Supermarket site in Timonium, Md.

The 31,000-square-foot store is expected to open late this year or early in 2019, developer Continental Realty said. It specializes in fresh local foods, including live and steamed crabs as well as store-made crab cakes.

B. Green operates other Green Valley Marketplace stores in Arnold and Elkridge, Md. The wholesaler also operates two Food Depot and two Cash & Carry stores in the Baltimore area.

“We are confident that our community-first and consumer-first philosophy will resonate with the Baltimore County marketplace, and that our grocery concept will offer a personal experience that does not currently exist in the market,” said Rick Rodgers, COO of Green Valley Marketplace, in a release. “This attitude starts with our belief that Green Valley is our customers’ store, and our associates’ goal is to deliver on that promise. We know of no other supermarket that steams live crabs to order. The majority of our salads and meal offerings are created from scratch. We pride ourselves on unparalleled customer service and offering one-of-a-kind food products with an emphasis on locally grown or raised items.”

Green Valley also offers signature store-fried chicken and Buffalo-style chicken wings; store-made sausage; slow-roasted beef and turkey; and fresh-to-go meals from Meals Made Easy and Ready Chef Go signature lines. The new location will feature in-store butchers, seafood mongers, catering options, a coffee shop in partnership with a local coffee roaster, and a holistic nutritionist to provide guidance on gluten-free, organic, “free from” and natural product lines, officials said.

The new Green Valley store will fill a void in the community, as the location has been vacant since the closure of the Mars Supermarket.

“Since Mars closed nearly two years ago, we have fielded numerous inquiries from the surrounding communities, hoping a new supermarket would replace them. Not only have we found a supermarket, but we attracted a locally owned business with longstanding ties to the Baltimore community and a rich history,” said David Donato, SVP of Continental Realty.
