Following news of a $97 million investment in the Michigan market that will take place this year, The Kroger Co. has added a new freezer/cooler distribution center to its expansion arsenal.
The retailer plans to open two new stores and three new fuel centers and perform 11 remodels in the state, which is currently home to about 130 Krogers and a dairy warehouse.
The new 606,000-square-foot Romulus, Mich., facility will be run by Penske Logistics, which will exclusively serve Kroger’s Michigan division and currently works with the retailer in other states.
Construction on the $98.5 million facility, dubbed Michigan Fresh Center, started in fall 2017 and concluded in fall 2018, but the facility just opened its doors June 4 after a strategic move into the building.
Rachel Hurst, corporate affairs manager for The Kroger Co. of Michigan, said the new facility will bring “greater convenience to The Kroger Co. of Michigan and enables us to supply store locations with fresher product every day.”
"All products housed in the new distribution center are Kroger products and the facility will only service Kroger's Michigan division,” she continued.
Michigan Fresh Center has convenient access to highways and features 105 loading docks and a variety of temperature sections.
