Lidl U.S. continues its growth push as the hard discounter last Wednesday opened its new $11 million Lidl store at 8849 Dorchester Rd. in North Charleston, South Carolina.

Built for Lidl from the ground up, the new store brings in 40 new jobs with starting pay for all associates at $16.50, which includes comprehensive benefits, the Arlington, Virgina-based division of Germany’s Schwarz Group said. The grocery retailer also offers healthcare for all full-time and part-time positions.

The hard discounter’s newest location in South Carolina’s Lowcountry held a ribbon cutting ceremony where the first 100 customers were presented with a gift card ranging from $5 to $100 each, according to the grocery retailer.

The new store will feature an easy-to-shop layout designed to be convenient for customers that has natural, non-ozone depleting refrigerants and high efficiency LED lighting, which reduces energy usage by up to 75% over traditional bulbs, Lidl said.

“Lidl will join North Charleston’s thriving business community, adding new jobs and capital investment, only strengthening our local economy,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said in a statement.

As consumers continue to seek out deals as food at home prices continue to rise, Lidl recently announced efforts to drop prices on more than 100 items in all of its stores across nine East Coast states.

The grocer introduced rotating price cuts on more than 100 items in all of its more than 170 stores.

“We recognize that inflation and rising food prices are impacting many families and we hope to give more relief through this Fall price-cutting campaign,” said Lidl US Chief Product Officer and EVP of Purchasing Stefan Schwarz, in a statement announcing the price drop. “We are committed to offering all of our customers the best value in our stores every day, and we continue to invest in additional ways for customers to save money when we know it matters most.”
