Lidl U.S., the Arlington, Va.-based division of Germany’s Schwarz Group, held a grand opening June 1 for its new store in McLean, Va.—bringing  its store count to 34 in the Old Dominion State.

Lidl said it invested $10 million in the new store at 1330 Chain Bridge Road. The store will employ more than 45 associates and starting pay for all associates will be $16 per hour and include comprehensive benefits, including healthcare for all full- and part-time positions, regardless of hours worked per week, Lidl said.

A June 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by company executives and local leaders, including Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Matthew Lohr, who said in a release, "Lidl has a long commitment to Virginia. ... We greatly appreciate all they do for the communities they serve."

Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust said McLean residents have been looking forward to the opening of the Lidl grocery store for some time because of its reputation for high-quality products at discount prices.

Lidl recently announced efforts to drop prices on more than 100 items in all of its stores across nine East Coast states. The price-cutting campaign, Lidl said, comes as inflationary pressures across the supply chain have led to sharp increases in food prices for many retailers, especially on staples such as meat, grains, coffee, frozen prepared foods and other household products.

"As many families contend with rising prices due to inflation, we hope to ease their financial burden at the checkout counter by investing even more to lower our prices," said Lidl U.S. President and CEO Michal Lagunionek, in a June 1 statement. "This price-cutting drive is part of Lidl's ongoing commitment to offer the best value in every community we serve."

Lidl said shoppers can expect to save more than $50 on the basket of items included in the summer campaign, which include original bratwurst with a new price of $3.49 (savings of $1.23); 100% apple juice at $1.48 (savings of $1.20); and AVA Black Angus Top Sirloin Steak at $8.44 (savings of $1), as well as other products. Lidl said the summer price drop on these items will begin June 8 through the end of August.

Looking to provide food to people in need in the community, Lidl also announced a partnership with SHARE Food Pantry of McLean. Lidl said it will donate $1 to the food bank for every new myLidl member who signs up and sets the new Lidl store in McLean as their home store.

Shoppers at the grand-opening celebration were able to take advantage of Lidl’s get-them-while-you-can special offers at the new store. The first 100 customers in line before the ribbon cutting were presented with a special gift card ranging from $5 to $100 each. Shoppers also were able to enter to win a $500 Lidl gift card, sample Lidl’s offerings and take advantage of special giveaways.

Earlier this year, Lidl held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its future Deer Park, N.Y., store—the grocer’s largest and first ground-up build on Long Island.
