Lidl to open 1st Washington, D.C., store next week

Lidl U.S., the Arlington, Virginia-based division of Germany’s Schwarz Group, is headed to the nation’s capital.

The grocery retailer will open its  newest store at 2224 Town Center Drive SE in Washington D.C., on Sept. 28. Located in the Skyland Town Center in Southeast D.C., the Lidl location will be the first full-service grocery store to open in Wards 7 and 8 in more than a decade, the grocery retailer said.

“We are ready–and the community is ready–to welcome Lidl to Ward 7,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser in a statement. “This grocery store has been a long time coming and it is going to help us make Skyland into a true town center. Welcome to DC, Lidl.”

The new store will bring not only a much-needed resource for everyone who lives in the neighborhood, but also job opportunities, Lidl said in a statement.

In Washington D.C., the store will create more than 60 new jobs in the city’s Wards 7 and 8, with starting pay for all associates at $16.50 per hour, which includes comprehensive benefits, Lidl said. The grocery retailer offers healthcare for all full-and-part-time positions.

The ribbon cutting at the new Lidl is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday and there will also be a soft opening of the store from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day.

Lidl U.S., which is in the midst of a major growth push, opened two new locations in August. The first location is at 11991 Reisterstown Rd. in Reisterstown, Maryland, and the second location opened in the Mayfair Shopping Center at 210 East Jericho Turnpike in Commack, New York.

In April Lidl broke ground with local officials at the site of its future Deer Park, New York, store—the grocer’s largest and first ground-up build on Long Island.

The new $15 million store, which will be the grocer’s 22nd store on Long Island, will be 35,359 square feet. The Deer Park location will be a state-of-the-art store set to open in early 2023, the grocer said in a statement.
