Lowes Foods is readying for expansion with five new stores in the Carolinas, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based grocer announced this week.

“All five of our new stores are in various stages of planning and construction, and we look forward to sharing opening timelines and plans in coming months,” said Tim Lowe, head of retail for parent company Alex Lee and president of Lowes Foods, in a statement.

Locations for the new stores include Pittsboro, North Carolina, which is scheduled to open later this year, Lowes Foods said in a statement. “We’re excited to be building additional Lowes Foods stores to serve the booming growth areas around Charlotte and northeast of Augusta, Georgia,” Lowe said.

The other four store locations include Concord, North Carolina, at the intersection of Christenbury Parkway and Cox Mill Rd.; Kannapolis, North Carolina, at the intersection of Kannapolis Parkway and Rogers Lake Rd.; Indian Land, South Carolina, along Highway 521 at Possum Hollow Rd.; and Aiken, South Carolina, at the intersection of Whiskey Road and Powerhouse Road Southeast.

Known to support local farmers and vendors, the five new locations will feature products from the Carolinas, the grocery retailer said.

Last year, Lowes Foods opened a 25,000-square-foot concept store in Huntersville, North Carolina, that features not only grocery essentials, but specialized foodservice and shopping as well as all-day entertainment. “We call this the Swiss Army Knife of grocery stores,” Lowe said. “Our new Huntersville store is like a food hall that will also serve as a community hub for morning coffee, family dinner on the go, beer with a friend, picking up groceries curbside, or a complete grocery shopping experience.”

Lowes Foods employs approximately 9,000 people and operates 81 full-service supermarkets. Lowes Foods is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alex Lee Inc.  Founded in 1931, Alex Lee is a family-owned and operated company that employs nearly 10,000 people. It serves as the parent company of Merchants Distributors, LLC, which provides full-service, wholesale distribution to supermarkets across the Southeastern United States.
