Tewksbury, Massachusetts-based Market Basket on Friday will open a new store in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, marking the grocery retailer’s move into the Worcester area.
The new 80,000-square-foot store will employ over 350 associates and will anchor the Edgemere Crossing development at 200 Hartford Turnpike. The grocery retailer’s fourth MB Spirits store will be next door.
“We are pleased to share with our customers an exciting store to shop, with the freshest seafood and produce to select from," Joseph W. Schmidt, in charge of store operations for parent company Demoulas Super Markets Inc., told WGB in an email. “We look forward to offering a ‘More for Your Dollar’ shopping experience to our customers for many more years to follow.”
The new store will feature over 50,000 food items as well as Market Basket’s signature departments, including Market’s Kitchen, Market’s Café, Niji Sushi and a butcher block.
Market Basket, which prides itself as a full-service supermarket with no self-checkout but instead “just people taking care of people,” is part of the Demoulas Super Markets, which began 106 years ago.
The grocery retailer now operates 87 stores in four New England states, with 53 stores in Massachusetts, 31 stores in New Hampshire, two stores in Maine and two stores in Rhode Island. Presently, there are two new Market Basket stores under construction in North Conway, New Hampshire, and Topsham, Maine, Schmidt told WGB in an email on Tuesday.
Last year, market analyst dunnhumby reported in its fifth-annual Retailer Preference Index that Market Basket moved up from No. 6 in 2020 to No. 3 for 2021. Market Basket ranked above Trader Joe’s, which fell four spots from No. 3 in the 2020 index to No. 7 in 2021. Consumers’ Checkbook has also recognized Market Basket as a top supermarket operator in the Northeast.
“As reported in Consumers’ Checkbook, a family that spends $200 a week on groceries can save $1,800 annually at Market Basket when compared to other supermarkets. No gimmicks, no frequent shopper cards, no membership fees—just straightforward, honest pricing,” Schmidt told WGB.
