Meijer’s newest brick-and-mortar store concept—convenience-focused Meijer Grocery— will open its first two stores in southeast Michigan's Orion Township and Macomb Township on Jan. 26, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based grocer said on Monday.

"By opening Meijer Grocery stores, we're introducing a new way for our customers to shop that provides convenience, value and the great quality our customers have always come to expect from Meijer," Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes said in a statement. "Our customers' needs are always evolving, and we're committed to meeting them where they are. That's why we're excited to share this new Meijer experience with the Orion and Macomb Township communities."

Providing a quick in-and-out shopping experience for every customer, Meijer Grocery is all about convenience, the Midwest grocer said in a statement.

"Orion and Macomb Townships are already very familiar with our Meijer supercenters, but we believe they will benefit from the added convenience Meijer Grocery will bring to their neighborhoods," said Don Sanderson, SVP of merchandising at Meijer. "We specifically chose to launch this new store format in southeast Michigan because we're a Michigan company that has been serving customers in metro Detroit for decades."

Ranging from 75,000-square-feet to 90,000-square-feet, Meijer Grocery will include the following departments in a condensed and quick-to-navigate footprint:

  • Produce and grocery

  • Meat counter with in-store meat cutters

  • Bakery with in-store cake decorators

  • Full-service deli

  • Pharmacy

  • Health and beauty care

  • Baby, pets and consumables

  • Card, party and floral

The stores will focus on local brands across all departments including Ann Arbor-based Zingerman's bakery items as well as pies from Achatz Handmade Pie Company and artisan bread from Crispelli's Bakery. Southeast Michigan-made products from vendors in the meat department at the new stores will include Rinaldi Fresh Sausage, Dearborn Brand, Kowalski Sausage Company and The Brinery. Detroit-style pizza chain, Buddy's Pizza’s frozen pizzas will be sold in the stores as well, the grocer said.

Meijer Grocery will also offer the same saving and shopping technology customers expect from a Meijer supercenter, including mPerks, Shop and Scan, Meijer Home Delivery, and Pickup.

Meijer, a privately-owned and family-operated company since 1934, operates 499 supercenters, neighborhood markets and Express locations throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
