Meijer is expanding its brick-and-mortar footprint in Indiana with a new supercenter.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer said on Thursday that it plans to open a 159,000-square-foot store in Elkhart, Indiana, on May 11, which will be the 11th Meijer store in northern Indiana. Additionally, a Meijer Express gas station is slated to open adjacent to the new supercenter next Thursday.

"We know that value and convenience are key for our customers, and the new store will provide both for Elkhart residents," said Maureen Mitchell, vice president of the Indiana-Kentucky Region for Meijer, in a statement. "Meijer is committed to investing in northern Indiana, and we look forward to providing a more convenient option close to home for grocery and other everyday needs here in Elkhart."

For Meijer, the Elkhart supercenter is part of an investment in the state of Indiana. The retailer first arrived in Indiana in 1994 on Grape Road in Mishawaka. The new Elkhart store will be the retailer's 42nd store in the state, and the company also operates a manufacturing facility in Middlebury. Currently, Meijer employs more than 10,000 team members statewide.

The new Indiana supercenter will feature Meijer’s signature categories, including grocery essentials, produce, bakery, meat and deli, as well as a floral area. Other departments will include a garden center, pharmacy, pet care section, electronics, toys, sports and apparel. Hiring for the new location continues, Meijer reported.

Last month, Meijer became the first retailer nationwide to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through the Flashfood app, which allows shoppers to buy heavily discounted food that’s nearing its best-by date.

Overall, Meijer operates 501 supercenters, neighborhood markets and express locations in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
