Meijer’s smaller brick-and-mortar store concept—convenience-focused Meijer Grocery— opened its first two stores in southeast Michigan's Orion Township and Macomb Township on Thursday.

"As a company, we've opened more than 500 supercenters, neighborhood markets and Meijer Express locations, and that feeling of excitement and anticipation as you welcome customers in for the first time never gets old," Executive Chairman Hank Meijer said in a statement. "But opening the doors of these stores feels particularly special because of the unique need they'll fulfill in our customers' everyday lives."

The 75,000- to 90,000-square-foot stores are located at 1107 S Lapeer Road in Lake Orion and 15375 24 Mile Road in Macomb Townships. They offer metro Detroit shoppers a condensed and quick-to-navigate footprint and will focus on local brands across all departments, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based grocer said.

Meijer Grocery features grocery essentials in all departments including a full-service deli, bakery with in-store cake decorators, items for babies and pets, floral, health and beauty, and in-store and drive-thru pharmacy.

The new stores also offer mPerks, Shop and Scan, Meijer home delivery and pickup.

"We look forward to seeing these new stores further our mission of enriching lives in the communities we serve, not just by offering convenient shopping solutions and positive economic impact, but also as strong and active community partners," Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said in a statement. "When we plan a new store, our relationship with that community begins long before the doors open and strengthens as we grow."

As part of Meijer’s connection to the community, the the Lake Orion store donated to The Village Food Pantry at Woodside Bible Church and the Macomb location supported the Macomb Charitable Foundation. Additional donations will be made in the coming weeks as part of the grand opening celebrations, the grocery retailer said.

Meijer is a privately-owned and family-operated company founded in 1934. The grocer operates 501 supercenters, neighborhood markets and express locations in the Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
