Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Meijer will open two new 159,000-square-foot supercenters in Ohio—one in Warren and the second in Wooster—on May 16, the grocery retailer announced on Tuesday.
Meijer, which has invested heavily in Ohio since opening its first store in 1981, said the new store openings will put the grocer at a 52-store count in the state. The retailer employs more than 11,000 team members statewide at stores, as well as at its distribution and manufacturing facilities in Tipp City.
The supercenters will feature grocery, fresh produce, bakery, meat and deli, as well as a floral area and garden center. Other departments will include pharmacy, pets, electronics, toys, sports and apparel.
Additionally, a Meijer Express gas station adjacent to both new stores will open on April 20. Meijer is currently hiring for all positions at the new supercenters.
"We've been so grateful for the warm welcome from area residents so far, and we look forward to providing them another option close to home for groceries and other everyday needs," said Todd Anderson, VP of the Ohio Region for Meijer, in a statement. "We know that value and convenience are key for our customers, and we look forward to being able to provide both here in Warren and Wooster."
Last Thursday, the grocery retailer announced plans to open a 159,000-square-foot store in Elkhart, Indiana, on May 11, which will be the 11th Meijer store in northern Indiana. Additionally, a Meijer Express gas station is slated to open next to the new supercenter next Thursday.
Earlier this year, the Midwest grocer premiered the retailer’s smaller brick-and-mortar store concept—convenience-focused Meijer Grocery— which are located in southeast Michigan's Orion Township and Macomb Township.
Meijer is a privately-owned and family-operated company founded in 1934. The grocer operates more than 500 supercenters, neighborhood markets and express locations in the Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
