Stater Bros. Markets has promoted Mike Reed to senior vice president and chief financial officer, the company announced Monday.

Reed, who previously served as senior vice president of property development and finance, succeeds Dave Harris, who retired from his position as executive vice president of finance, CFO and principal accounting officer.

In addition to his new role overseeing financial accountability for Stater Bros., Reed will continue overseeing real estate development and will remain on the company’s Executive Leadership Team. He will report to CEO and Chairman Pete Van Helden, the company said.

“It has been a pleasure working with Mike over the last several years as he has overseen the opening of several new stores and the remodeling of numerous existing locations,” Van Helden said in a statement. “With Mike overseeing the company’s finances, Stater Bros. will be well-positioned for success well into the future.”

The promotion comes a little over a year after Van Helden succeeded Phil Smith as chairman of the board of the San Bernardino, California-based grocer in October 2022. In September 2022, Stater Bros., which operates about 170 stores in Southern California, also promoted Greg McNiff to chief operating officer in addition to his previously held position as president of the company.

Reed joined Stater Bros. in 2014 as senior director in the grocer’s Real Estate and Property Management Department. He was promoted to vice president of real estate in 2016 and to senior vice president of real estate and development in 2018.

In the real estate and development leadership role, Reed oversaw construction, store design, equipment purchasing and facilities maintenance. The facilities maintenance role included refrigeration, energy management and both general and special maintenance projects, the company said.

Reed earned a Master of Science in Food Industry Leadership from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Boise State University. He also serves as treasurer and a board member of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association; chairman of the Inland Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Trust Fund; and member and past retail chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
