California-based Mitsuwa Marketplace will open its 12th store in the U.S. on Jan. 21 in California’s San Fernando Valley, the Japanese grocery chain announced on Monday.
“We are very excited to open our store in the Northridge neighborhood,” said Takeshi Izuma, president and CEO of Mitsuwa Corporation, in a statement. “We are so excited to join this community and offer our new neighbors a taste of Japan."
The approximately 9,600-square-foot store will be located at 8940 Tampa Ave. in Northridge, California, at the Walnut Grove Shopping Center, which is minutes from California State University's Northridge campus, the grocer said in a statement.
Currently operating in five states, Mitsuwa Marketplace’s new location, previously occupied by Pier 1 Imports, will promote the neighborhood shopping center location as a grocery-anchored destination. The new store will feature an expansive offering of Japanese items including cosmetics, fresh meat and produce, as well as popular Japanese packaged goods.
“Mitsuwa will bring a unique market and culinary experience to the North San Fernando Valley that’s been missing,” said Kyle Fishburn, of Kennedy Wilson Brokerage, who represented the landlord in securing the 10-year lease, in a statement.
The grand opening will take place at 10 a.m. and will include a performance by the Japanese Taiko Drum performers.
Based in Torrance, California, Mitsuwa Marketplace was founded in 1998. The company operates seven stores in California, and one each in Illinois, Texas, Hawaii and New Jersey.
