Seeking to expand its fresh food options, Big Y—one of New England’s largest independently owned supermarket chains—has announced plans to build a new concept, a Big Y Express Fresh Market at 1500 Main St., as part of the Tower Square in its hometown of Springfield, Mass.

The 10,000-square-foot Big Y Express Fresh Market will have a downtown format that will provide workers and area residents fresh and convenient options, which are currently not available in the area, the grocery retailer said in a statement.

While not a complete supermarket due to its size, the grocer said it will have all the everyday necessities. High-quality prepared meals and sandwiches, along with natural and organic products and an in-house sushi chef preparing fresh sushi daily will be offered at the new location.

“We are excited to bring an entirely new concept to downtown Springfield,” said Colin D’Amour, senior director of Big Y Express, in a statement. “We know that there has been an appetite for Big Y’s fresh and local foods for many years now. We are confident that customers will enjoy our many offerings. We are working diligently with our contractors to establish a timeline for opening and are excited to be a part of the downtown community.”

In addition, the Springfield, Mass.-based supermarket chain last December initiated its online same-day order and pickup to several select stores. The grocery retailer views its online shopping same-day service as another win for the company’s e-commerce platform. “I am particularly excited about the implementation of same-day order and pickup. I’m grateful to our team for bringing the best e-commerce experience to our customers,” said Christian D’Amour, Big Y’s director of e-commerce, in a December statement.

Big Y operates 84 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 71 supermarkets, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and 10 Big Y Express gas and convenience locations with almost 12,000 employees.
