Grocery stores are like people—they come in all different shapes and sizes. And here at The Local Checkout, I’ll be taking a closer look through a wide lens of independent grocery stores. Because just like people—they all matter.
New grocery makes residents happy
Residents on Chicago’s Northwest neighborhood of Edison Park are more than happy to hear that the former Happy Foods grocery store location at 6783 N. Northwest Highway in Chicago, Illinois, will soon become a family-owned grocery market.
Alderman Anthony Napolitano told The Local Checkout that the new grocery store will begin construction in the next few months and is a huge welcome to the residents in Edison Park.
“We're getting calls nonstop on it—everyone is so happy, ” he said.
Happy Foods in Edison Park closed its doors last September as the owners retired.
A timeline of opening date details is not on the boards yet, but Alderman Napolitano did mention that residents will be able to meet the new owners at Edison Park Fest Aug. 11-13.
Eduardo Haro, one of the new owners, told The Local Checkout that the neighborhood excitement for the new store is much appreciated. “We really hope to meet their expectations,” he said.
Haro gave a big shout out to Dom’s Kitchen and Market, another independent grocer in the Chicago area calling the concept the “independent grocers of the future.”
Kitchen offerings
Speaking of Dom’s, the retailer just announced the introduction of L’Osteria Bowls to its kitchen offerings. The L'Osteria Bowls are available in six menu options at both the Lincoln Park and Old Town locations in Chicago.
The latest new concept from the grocer brings “elevated flavors you’ve come to expect from Dom’s,” Dom’s Executive Chef James Klewin said.

Diaspora Groceries
Actress/author/comedienne Tiffany Haddish “believes access to healthy food choices and financial literacy are key components to building strong families and communities,” according to the Diaspora Groceries, a market Haddish is hoping to open in LA’s Crenshaw District.
A vision of Haddish, the store—which has a goal to open in 2024—will focus on “community empowerment through financial literacy, health education and providing 80% of store items from local,” according to the Diaspora Groceries website.
