Publix Food Markets on Tuesday revealed in an email to WGB it has executed a lease on a new store in Columbia, South Carolina, adding to its already 65 stores in the state.

While details are limited, the 45,000-square-foot store is projected to open first quarter of 2024 and will be located at the Market at Spears Creek at the corner of Spears Creek Church Road and Earth Road in Columbia, Publix said. Currently, there are 15 Publix stores in Columbia listed on the grocery retailer's website.

Last month, Publix opened its newest location in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. The 48,387-square-foot store is located at 33 Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort.

“We are very excited for the opening of our newest Publix location,” said Hannah Herring, Publix media relations manager, in a statement regarding the Beaufort opening. “We look forward to continuing to provide premier service and quality products to new and existing customers in the Beaufort market.”

Publix's expansion plans in its home state of Florida have seen no signs of slowing as well. The Lakeland, Florida-based grocery retailer recently expanded its customer base in the South Tampa area, with a new store opening at White Eagle in Bradenton. The 48,387-square-foot supermarket at 13150 SR 64 East features an adjacent Publix Liquors.

New store locations set to open next month include a new store in  Mobile, Alabama, as well as Clermont and Gainesville, Florida, according to the grocer’s website.

Publix, which is one of the country's largest employee-owned grocers with more than 225,000 associates on its payroll, reported second quarter sales of nearly $13 billion earlier this month.
