Who knew that a mathematical expressive would ever cause such enthusiasm for desserts? Today, in celebrating National Pi Day and Albert Einstein's birthday, Meijer is selling all its six-inch pies for $3.14 each in all stores across its six-state footprint. The special offer by the Midwestern grocery retailer goes for one week.
"We are delighted to help our customers celebrate National Pi Day with a special price promotion," said Don Sanderson, group vice president for fresh for Meijer, about the promotion. "Customers love our fresh-baked pie selection and get a kick out of the play on price in honor of the holiday."
It wasn't until a decade ago that Pi Day became a thing. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives officially designated March 14 as National PI Day, as an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). In recent years Americans have chosen to mark the day by eating pie, and retailers by promoting it.
Bashas' is offering a different spin on the holiday celebration, dividing its pies in half to offer the half-size desserts for the $3.14 price. The specially priced Bashas' half-pies come in apple, apple crumb, peach, cherry, pumpkin and blueberry today through March 19.
On its Twitter account, Publix encouraged pie lovers to tweet their name, upon which the Publix social media team would tweet their recommendation for the best National Pi Day dessert. The message had more than 200 replies by midday.
