SpartanNash has acquired Shop-N-Save Food Centers (SNS), a three-store Michigan chain that has been a SpartanNash distribution customer for almost 25 years, the retailer and wholesaler announced June 14.

Family-owned SNS was founded in 1973 by William "Bill" DeVries and operated locations in Benzonia, Fremont and Ludington, Mich., Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash said in a news release. The three SNS stores have been rebranded as Family Fare locations. Family Fare launched in 1962 and now operates 86 stores throughout the Midwest, according to the company.

"We are honored that the DeVries family is entrusting SpartanNash to build upon their legacy and bring new offerings to its team members and grocery shoppers," SpartanNash President and CEO Tony Sarsam said in a statement.

"Our grocery stores are an important contributor to our business strategy, allowing us to provide a full portfolio of solutions for independent and chain customers that go beyond food distribution," Sarsam continued. "We leverage the insights from our retail stores to continuously innovate our products and operations across our global network."

Last week, SpartanNash successfully fended off a board challenge from an activist investor group critical of, among other things, the company's real-estate strategy. In a long-awaited vote, shareholders elected all nine of the board members that the company had put forth. SpartanNash reported a 7.2% increase in comp sales as well as an improvement in its gross profit rate in the first quarter of fiscal 2022.
