SpartanNash said it has teamed up with Stamford, Conn.-based Specialty Food Partners to broaden access to local and specialty products for the 2,100 independent grocers that SpartanNash's distribution business serves.
Through a new online platform, SpartanNash Specialty Direct, independent grocers can browse and order from a selection of thousands of newly available items and pay consolidated invoices, according to a news release from the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer and distributor.
"As grocers face growing demands from shoppers seeking new, unique and local specialty products, this seamless process will save retailers valuable time and operational resources in sourcing those items," SpartanNash stated. An expanded selection of specialty and seasonal products also can make independent retailers served by SpartanNash more competitive in their local markets, the company added.

"There is a misconception that only large metro areas have the need for trending and specialty grocery products," stated SFP founder and CEO Tony Lee, "but that is definitely not the case and has really shifted over the last few years, resulting in broader demand for these products." Lee said SpartanNash's expansive distribution network made the company an ideal partner for SFP, and that the new business relationship bolsters access for consumers who don't live in big cities or suburbs to "satisfy their newest flavor exploration or try the latest startup brand."
Beyond its portfolio of independent-grocer customers, SpartanNash owns and operates 145 supermarkets across the country, primarily under the Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market banners.
