Family-owned and -operated grocery store chain Stew Leonard's held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for its newest location at the Styertowne Shopping Center, 467 Allwood Rd., Clifton, New Jersey.

The 56,000-square-foot store will be the second grocery store in New Jersey for the Norwalk, Connecticut-based grocery retailer, which now operates a store in Paramus, New Jersey, at 700 Paramus Park. It is slated to open next summer.

Plans for the new store also include moving Stew Leonard’s Wines & Spirits of Clifton, located in the Promenade Shops at Clifton, into the new location.

“We are excited because we’ll be able to sell both food and wine in the store as we plan to move Stew Leonard’s Wines & Spirits of Clifton into the new location,” CEO Stew Leonard Jr. told Winsight Grocery Business following the news earlier this year that the supermarket chain had selected Clifton for its second New Jersey location.

Stew Leonard's is well-known for its engaging shopping experience as well as a strong offering of fresh and prepared foods.

Dubbed the “Disneyland of Dairy Stores” by the New York Times for its costumed characters, scheduled entertainment and animatronics throughout the store, the East Coast grocery retailer was founded by Stew Leonard Sr., who died on April 26.
